When in Rum

We all woke early Saturday morning unsure of what the day would bring. (Should we stay or should we go!) After a quick weather check we decided staying sounded like a much better idea. Especially after a kind invitation by locals Bobby and his girlfriend Gro to a 'shindig' at their place. Heading into the Marina we met Bobby and his friends, a lovely group of guys flown in for the weekend from Jupiter Island, Fl. They invited us to join them for a days fishing and exploring on Bobby’s boat but sadly we had to decline due to battery 'issues' on board.

Looking out to the horizon we saw dark clouds looming. With this in mind Freyja and Pippa felt this, with our short water supply would be a perfect opportunity for a rain shower. Accidentally emptying an almost full bottle of shampoo over themselves it became quickly obvious that although it was raining, it wasn't quite enough. Blind and giggling, they fell about the foredeck until defeat was obvious and had to submit to a real shower to rinse off.

With the boat fixed and everyone showered for the first time in about 5 days and having learnt the hard way the day before, we smothered ourselves in DEET to try and hold of the human hungry insects that lurk on the shores of Rum Cay! We hopped into the dinghy and headed for Bobby's. When we arrived the food preparation was in full swing. The boys were busy preparing the conch and the fish. All the stragglers were put to work chopping herbs and peppers ready for ceviché. Esmé and Freyja were particularly helpful as they sat eating their way through an oversized lump of cheese, yum!

We were welcomed into their home like old friends. Freshly prepared and perfectly cooked lobster was handed out to all who wanted. The fish was seared on the stove with local Bahamian spices all served with veg from the garden. We all quickly tucked into the delights of the days catch.

After dinner we climbed into the back of Bobby's truck (which turned out not to have any brakes) and headed down the hill to Kaye's bar, the local (and only) nightspot. All was safe though after we rolled down through what felt like a few bushes. Upon arrival Scotty jumped behind the bar and announced it to be ladies night there were only 4 ladies! The drinks were strong, the music loud, and in typical 'slow flight' fashion the crew and everyone else in the bar got their groove on and danced, feet in the sand into the night.

We have been so lucky to have met such wonderful people along our journey so far. But none have been so kind, hospitable and helpful to us as Bobby and Gro. Without their help we would still be bashing our way to Puerto Rico and not nearly so well fed! Thank you to you both.

Big love Freyja, Esmé, Pippa & Abe
Xx
